Every year for the past twenty years on the Queens Birthday weekend in June in a sleepy little seaside town called Coolangatta, known mainly for it's glorious weather and beautiful beaches, a remarkable event known as ‘Wintersun' takes place.
During what is supposed to be winter this normally quiet and laid back town on the border of Queensland and N.S.W. plays host to the largest nostalgia festival in the Southern Hemisphere.
Popular Australian band Brandi and the Badcats will once again feature at the amazing "Wintersun" music festival this Queen's Birthday long weekend.
"Wintersun" includes hundreds of musicians from all over Australia and the world, bringing their sound to every street corner and available venue in and around Coolangatta. Traditionally a fifties event with Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly and Rhythm ‘n' Blues predominating, it now includes music from the sixties and seventies as well.
Brandi and the Badcats are a three piece band originally from Melbourne and now based in Queensland. Formed by husband and wife Reno and Brandi to play to the Rock'n'Roll dancers in Melbourne five years ago the band has blossomed into one of Australia's best rockabilly bands.
With Brandi on Double Bass and lead vocals they punch out mighty versions of classic rockabilly tunes as well as hot new originals. It's the fifties brought into the now with catchy relevant songs about current issues plus the usual themes of love won and lost, and Cadillac cars. Reno's awesome guitaring blows you away and with drummer Steve the rhythm section is solid and uncompromising. But the most powerful aspect of the band has got to be Brandi's voice and double bass playing.
Brandi only swapped to the Double Bass from the electric bass two years ago. Originally she played a Fender Precision. The same one that she bought when she started playing bass after reading Suzi Quatro's biography. Obviously Suzi had a big influence on Brandi because everywhere the Badcats played they were continually asked to “Do Suzi". And so the Badcats started “The Wild One Australia's Tribute to Suzi" Show performing to packed houses since 2005.
The "Wild One" show will also be featured at Wintersun this year with a performance in The Showcase Arena on Thursday 7th June and Sunday 10th June at the New Show Stage Evan's Boat Harbour. This show demonstrates how versatile this little lady truly is. Not only can Brandi belt out Rockabilly but she can deliver Quatro with all the attitude of Suzi herself.
The Wild One has its own My Space at www.myspace.com/wildonetributetosuzi. Make sure you grab yourself a copy of the Brandi and the Badcats CD (www.mustangrecords.com.au) and check out their gig guide (see www.myspace.com/brandiandthebadcats) - nothing beats seeing this dynamic trio live!
