One of Australia's last bushmen and storytellers, Joe Daly, has died in Broken Hill in north-west New South Wales.
Mr Daly was 78 and his experiences in the bush proved the basis for more than 50 songs he wrote for Slim Dusty.
He was born in Broken Hill and left school when he was 11 to work in the bush but gained national fame as a songwriter, poet and author.
He told ABC Radio two years ago he had been "crook for a number of years" but his life had been good.
"I'd do it again, and people say you are mad and you're stupid," he said.
"I had a lot of fun out there and I got hurt quite, you know, broke a few bones and that but I would do it again, for sure."
