Phillip Island is about 2 hours by car from Melbourne, Victoria. It is one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations for day trips or longer stays. A large variety of activities exist for families and tourists. Each night of the year, you can visit the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, containing a world class visitor (tourist) centre with cafe, gift shop, museum and interactive computer displays. A Brief History of Phillip Island

George Bass discovered Phillip Island when he entered Westernport Bay in January, 1798. Long before this it had for thousands of years been part of the lands roamed by the Bunurong people, the coastal to inland indigenous (Aboriginal) people of Australia. Bass returned with Matthew Flinders in 1798, landing at Rhyll on Phillip Island. George Bass called it "Snapper Island" and a memorial to this landing is maintained near the pier at Rhyll.
