Luckily for me the new race brakepads recommended and installed by our professional mechanical advisor, Tony Di Gennaro, did their job and somehow I got through that first turn. That left Turns 2 and 3 to survive, amidst a pack of other cars eagerly swarming around me and unaware of my mechanical problems. There was no room to move and it looked like a high speed shunt was inevitable.
That day fortune was smiling on me, and as my car ran into Turn 3 with smoke billowing out from the blown clutch, I was able to steer off the black stuff, miss the trye wall and park it away from the racing line. Then it was the embarrassment of sitting there waiting for the recovery truck to come and tow me back to pitlane whilst the crowds and my fellow competitors looked on!

I can still recall the first time my racecar broke down in the middle of a race at Calder Park Raceway (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia). I'd been tearing down the long main straight, upwards of 200kph, and as I went to gear down and brake to take the harrowing Turn One, there was no response from the gearbox.

Let me tell you, its definitely not fun, you feel as if somehow its your own fault. What could I have done? What did I do wrong? And exactly what is the problem? There's only one way to get the answers. Hang in there for that trip back to the garage, and then let yourself be debriefed by the experts, and search out the facts. Getting angry and upset doesn't help much. This is what life and racing is all about.
